Calling all feline lovers...

The 'Local and Foreign Cat' competition - organised by the Belait Woman Groups Association (WI) - is still open for registration until 4 pm on July 30.

The annual event is held in conjunction with the monarch's birthday celebrations.

Organised for the ninth year straight, the competition this year is set to unfold at the Kuala Belait Municipal Hall at 8 am on July 31. Members of the public are welcome to check out the various breeds of feline beauties at the show.

Organising Chairman Dyg Hjh Julia binte Chee noted that the competition hopes to relay the message that caring for cats can prove to be stress relieving.

The event is split into five categories - Persian, Siamese, Local, Neutered and Mix Breed.

Every year the competition draws encouraging response. Last year, over 50 participants signed up their pets for the event.

This year, the cats will be judged primarily on their fur and health.

The extra prize categories include the 'Most Photogenic,' 'Biggest' and 'Best Of the Best.'

According to Dyg Hjh Julia, the judges will comprise professional veterinarians from the government and private sector.

To avoid complications, owners are urged to study the breed of cats they are entering into the competition, she added.

Cat owners are encouraged to participate in the competition, where entry forms are still obtainable from Dyg Hjh Julia at LTS 561, Jalan Singa Menteri Kampong Mumong or by contacting 3331679 or 8767128.

In addition to the competition, a local pet store will showcase various cat food and accessories on the same day.

The Belait District WI will also be holding a 'Bintang Remaja' competition to showcase singing talents among teens in the district.

The competition will be held at Tudong Saji Kuala Belait on July 25.

The Bintang Remaja competition hopes to uncover potential singers. Out of the 18 entries received, WI has selected 12 finalists.

Members of the public are invited to show support for the local talents.

Meanwhile, a 'Masquerade Fashion Show' is scheduled to unfold at the Tudong Saji Kuala Belait on July 23. Initially held only for women, the show is now open to men also. It is open to participants aged 12 years and above.

Organised by the Kampong Mumong Woman's Bureau, the July 23 event aims to foster relations among residents in the said village.

In addition to the masquerade competition, other activities - such as classical singing by veterans and cultural dance by Indonesians - will also be held.

Entry forms for the said competition are also available from Dyg Hjh Julia before the competition date. - Borneo Bulletina (19th July 2005)
