Outstanding students awarded

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam's eldest granddaughter, YAM Pengiran Anak Raheemah Sanaul Bolkiah binti Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Hj Abdul Rahim was among the recipients of this year's Outstanding and Best Student Award.

The Outstanding and Best Student Award is an annual activity of the Education Ministry. This year's event was jointly conducted by the Lower Education Section of the Department of Schools and Private Education Section.

Yesterday, the awardees were presented with their prizes at a ceremony officiated by Minister of Health, Pehin Dato Paduka Hj Suyoi Hj Osman, at the ICC in Berakas.

Also gracing the ceremony were the parents of His Majesty's granddaughter, HRH Princess Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah and YAM Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim.

The aim of the award presentation is to show appreciation to successful students who have excelled in their academic performance and also in co-curricular activities. It also acts as an incentive and motivation for students to achieve greater success in the future.

Recipients of the awards and prizes comprised primary students of government and private schools nationwide.

They have been selected as recipients for the outstanding and best student awards based on several criteria including being diligent and consistent throughout their studies, a determination to learn, being kind and having good moral values as well as obeying school rules and teachers, besides having an exemplary caring, honest, cheerful and trustworthy attitude.

The selected students must also have an excellent attendance record, active in co-curricular activities in and outside school and record a good achievement in their participation.

Yesterday's presentation saw six primary students from government primary schools and another six from private schools receiving the outstanding award from the guest of honour.

Receiving the Best Student Awards were 144 students from government primary schools and 36 from private schools. All the recipients were presented with certificates, cash and books contributed by the Lower and Private Education Section of the Department of Schools, Language and Literature Bureau, Department of Information and the Islamic Dakwah Centre.

Also contributing to the list of prizes were two local banks, namely Tabung Amanah Islam Berhad (TAIB) and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad.

Acting Education Minister, Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman, Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Dyg Apsah Hj Abd Majid, and Vice Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail Hj Duraman were among the guests present at the function. - Borneo Bulletin (25th August 2006)
