Belait District eyes six wins in a row

Will the Belait District field performance at the get- together with the monarch win for best performance this year and maintain its winning record for six years in a row?

Chairman of the field performance, Dr Hj Harun bin Mokti, who led Belait District to five consecutive victories with his unique performance concept, field design and choreography, is confident that this year's showcase will draw a bigger crowd than last year's.

Appreciating the 'Beauty of Art' is the concept for the field performance this year at the get-together with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan Brunei Darussalam, scheduled to take place on July 22 in conjunction with the ruler's 60th birthday celebration.

Hj Harun noted that the get-together is expected to draw more than 35,000 people to Padang Bandaran, not including an estimated 10,000 field performers from the public sector, education institutions, private sector, non-governmental organisations, mukim and kampong consultative councils and the multi-racial community in the district.

This year's field performance carries the theme 'Rampai Seni Meraih Gemilang' which illustrates messages on culture and art among the district's residents.

Disabled people and veterans in the district will be given the opportunity to join in the festivities this year in a musical performance during the get-together. This reflects how all sections of the community are uniting in contributing towards the success of His Majesty's birthday celebrations, said Hj Harun.

The colourful performances will include martial arts shows by karatedo, taekwando and sword kungfu groups. There will also be traditional music combining Hadrah, Gendang Mukun, Dondang, Rebana, Labik with contemporary and traditional musical instruments.

Rehearsal took place early last week and a dress rehearsal will be held on July 18.

The biggest exhibition in Belait District will also take place during the grand event in the vicinity of Padang Bandaran to showcase the latest technologies and products from four sectors, namely private, government, education and community. His Majesty is expected to tour the exhibition during the get-together.

Various events have also been lined up to mark the ruler's 60th birthday which will include the annual free mega concert on July 31, which reportedly attracted over 50,000 people from the other districts and the neighbouring country in the previous years with performances by local and foreign artistes such KRU, Erra Fazira, Saiful Apek, Yassin, Pretty Ugly and Yassin from Malaysia. - Borneo Bulletin (5th July 2006)
