His Majesty to attend Merdeka celebration

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is expected to attend Malaysia's 50th Merdeka celebration on August 31.

Several other Asean leaders are also expected to attend the event.

Malaysian national news agency Bernama reported that His Majesty and Queen Elizabeth's second son, Prince Andrew are among those expected to be at the gathering.

Others include Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Laos Prime Minister Bovasone Bouphavanh.

Preparations for the historic event are in full swing with the Malaysian capital decked in colours of the national flag.

Malaysia's Deputy Chief Secretary at the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Mokhtar Abas, said 25,000 people are expected to take part in the celebration at Independence Square or Dataran Merdeka.

The celebration at Dataran Merdeka will be divided into three segments, each telling a different story on the struggle and achievements of Malaysia's independence. - Borneo Bulletin (28th August 2007)
