His Majesty at Teachers' Day awards

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to present more awards to 14 teachers during a Teacher's Day celebration at the International Convention Centre, Berakas.

Also in attendance were HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah and HRH Prince Abdul Malik.

Upon arrival, His Majesty and Their Royal Highnesses were greeted by the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib.

The event began with the playing of the national anthem and the recital of the Surah al-Fatihah and doa selamat in honour of Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien and teachers who have passed away, led by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Hj Awg Abdul Aziz, the State Mufti.

This was followed with the recital of the Al-Quran by Mohd Irfan bin Major (Rtd) Hj Abd Rahman, a Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan student, who was also champion of the al-Quran recital competition for schools and colleges this year.

The Minister of Education gave a welcoming speech, before His Majesty delivered his titah. The event also featured a declamation of a sajak entitled " Kasih Sumbangsih" and a choir performance of "Guru Harapan Bangsa" by students of Orang Kaya Besar Imas Primary School.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of meritorious, special and excellent awards to deserving recipients by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Four teachers received Meritorious Teacher Awards along with certificates of honour, $12,000 in cash each, gold medals and free medical expenses, including treatments in first-class wards at government hospitals and medical services at home. They were Cikgu Awg Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Mohd Salleh, Cikgu Hjh Hajibah binti Umar, Cikgu Awg Hj Ramli bin Hj Tunggal and Cikgu Hj Abdul Samat bin Kahar.

Meanwhile, Cikgu Hj Abu Farhan Cadogan Edwards bin Abdullah, Cikgu Hj Abd Lahai bin Lakim, Cikgu Hj Abd Hamid bin Pehin Datu Panglima Hj Abu Bakar and Cikgu Hj Mohd Hassan bin Sunggoh received Special Teacher's Day Awards, plaques, certificates of honour, $4,000 in cash each, and free medical expenses.

Excellent Teacher Awards were also presented to six teachers. Cikgu Hjh Isah @ Hjh Jamaliah binti Hj Ismail received an award for being the best teacher in her respective fiel, which consisted of $6,000 in cash, a medal and a certificate of honour.

Other recipients of the Excellent Teacher Awards were Dyg Hjh Jainah binti Hj Musa in the field of Midwifery, Dyg Hjh Norisah binti Hj Salleh in Administration and Management of Primary Schools, Cikgu Imbon bin Singgoh in Geography, Cikgu Dyg Hjh Alimah binti Hj Ali in Primary Mathematics and Pg Hjh Jauyah Bte Pg Hj Damit in Malay.

They each received a certificate of honour, $4,000 in cash and a gold medal, as well as the opportunity to further their studies depending on conditions of training and services. At the same time, some 24 teachers from various fields, including a headmaster, also received special mention awards.

The benevolent monarch later consented to receive greetings from education officers and teachers. - Borneo Bulletin (28th Oct 2007)
