Sultan holds bilateral meeting with Colombian President
By Liza Mohd in Lima, Peru

After attending the gala dinner at Ministry of Defense Convention Center in Lima yesterday evening, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam proceeded to attend a bilateral meeting with the President of Colombia Albaro Uribe on the Apec sidelines.

The meeting was to enhance ties between both countries despite the absence of trade relations.

Columbia is not part of the Apec member countries but the country expressed keen interest to become an Apec member and called for support from Apec leaders and business entrepreneurs during the summit and forum. Chile, Mexico and Peru are the only Latin American members of Apec and the group has said it would not consider new membership until 2010.

Both leaders further expressed views that Apec can play a role in strengthening the economic relation in the Asia-Pacific region.

At the Apec CEO Summit yesterday, the Colombian President also asked entrepreneurs to support Colombia's efforts to become a P-4 member before the governments of Chile, New Zealand, Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.

The one-on-one meeting took place at the Double Tree Hilton Hotel in the Miraflores district of Lima. - Borneo Bulletin (24th Nov 2008)
