Royalty at Aidilfitri prayers

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to attend the Aidilfitri prayers along with thousands of other worshippers on Monday, at the Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah mosque in Kiarong.

Brunei celebrated the first day of Aidilfitri on Monday after the unsuccessful sighting of the new moon last Saturday.

The Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Dr Ustaz Hj Awg Mohd Zain, who is also the chairman of the committee for major Islamic celebrations for the year 1430 Hijriah, greeted His Majesty upon arrival.

The Aidilfitri sunnat prayer was led by Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Abdul Hamid bin Bakal, while the special sermon at the Aidilfitri prayer was delivered by the Syariah Chief Judge, Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Seti Ustaz Hj Awg Yahya bin Hj Ibrahim.

Accompanying His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Jefri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Hj 'Abdul 'Azim, His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

The Aidilfitri prayer was observed in mosques, suraus and religious halls nationwide on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month in the Islamic calendar. - Borneo Bulletin (23rd September 2009)
