Her Majesty awards PPP Al-Quran reading winners

Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, the Royal Patron of Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar consented yesterday to attend the Girl Guides Association (PPP) Al-Quran Reading Competition Awards ceremony.

The prestigious event was held yesterday at the Banquet Hall of the Legislative Council Building in the capital.

Accompanying Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness were HRH Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah, HRH Princess Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah, HRH Princess Hajah Majeedah Nuurul Bulqiah, HRH Princess Hajah Hafizah Sururul Bulqiah, HRH Princess Hajah Masna, President of the Girl Guides Association, HRH Princess Hajah Amal Umi Kalthom and HRH Princess Hajah Noor Ehasani

Dyg Hjh Siti Hafsah binti Hj Abdul Halim, Chief Commissioner of PPP in her welcoming remarks paid tribute to Her Majesty's attendance at the function.

The Chief Commissioner also highlighted that a new surau, which can accommodate some 200 worshippers, built at the PPP headquarters was completed.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards by Her Majesty to the champions, 1st runner up and 2nd runner up of the competition. Her Majesty also presented souvenirs to the four judges of the competition.

In the Brownies category Dyg Siti Waznah Major (Rtd) Hj Abd Rahman from Sunshine School Brownies emerged as the champion. Dyg Nur Rasikah Mohd Dahani from SM Sayyidina Husain Girl Guides was the champion in the Girl Guides and Girl Rangers category. Dyg Hjh Nurhafidzah Hj Hasan, Leader of Royal Brunei Marines Primary School Brownies was the champion in Young and Adult Leaders category whilst Dyg Muliana Hj Umar, Brunei Muara Assistant Commissioner was the champion in the Council Members and Commissioners category.

Prior to a thanksgiving recital (doa selamat), Her Majesty and other members of the Royal family were entertained to a Nasyid performance by Brownies from Rimba II Primary School.

The Al-Quran Reading Competition District Level was started on April 10 while the Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam Al-Quran Reading Competition Finals, which was organised by Belait District was held on May 10.

A total of 69 participants; 32 from Brunei-Muara, 16 from Belait and 21 from Tutong (none from Temburong) represented their districts in this year's competition. - Borneo Bulletin (30th May 2009)
