Prince Haji Sufri joins Olympic Day Run

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, joined hundreds of people in an Olympic Day Run at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

Accompanying His Royal Highness was YAM Pengiran Muda 'Abdul 'Aleem.

The run was an annual event and the main event to mark the Olympic Day 2010 celebration organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC).

Organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, it was also held in a bid to encourage more people, including those with special needs, to take part in sports.

In his message in the 2010 Olympic Day booklet, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah stated that this yearly event is not just for the sake of commemorating the Olympic Day but much more than that. "This is the moment where we should remind ourselves yet again of our duty in making sure that sports activities continue to thrive in this country. To promote Olympic Values and Olympism is our shared responsibility. It is a worthy cause. It is indeed a thrill for us all to see participants from all walks of life celebrate the Olympic Day with us. The participants are growing in number each year and I hope this year it is even more."

The event was divided into six categories, including several categories for those with special needs.

Under the special needs categories, Blind Open was won by Md Jamary bin Danggat.

The hearing disabilities category for boys was won by Md Hadi Zulhilmi bin Nirwan while those for girls was won by Juwidah Metussin. Hirdan Hj Abd Kadir won the Wheel Chair Open. For those with intellectual disabiltiies, the under-15 boys title was won by Md Nazri bin Ramli, under-15 girls was won by Norshidah Awg Doming, above-16 boys was won by Abd Aziz Hj Hussaini and above-16 girls was won by Nuramalshikin Hj Nafiah.

The 10km Under-49 Open was won by Abd Malik Hidup. Five-kilometre Under-15 Boys was won by Noorfaharddi Nordin while the 5km Under-15 Girls was won by Nur Farrah Hana bte Md Abidin. Tan Siew King won the 5km Women's Open category and Lee Kim Hing won the 5km Above-50 Men's category. - Borneo Bulletin (21st June 2010)
