Princess attends law meeting chaired by Attorney General

Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah attended the Meeting of Senior Officials of Commonwealth Law Ministries and the 11th Meeting of Law Ministers and Attorneys General of Small Commonwealth Jurisdictions which were held from October 18-22, 2010 at the Commonwealth Secretariat in Marlborough House, London, England.

According to a press release from the Attorney General's Chambers, the Brunei Darussalam delegation was led by the Attorney General, Datin Paduka Hajah Hayati binti POKSDSP Haji Mohd Salleh, and comprised senior officers of the Attorney General's Chambers.

The Meeting of Law Ministers and Attorneys General of Small Commonwealth Jurisdictions was opened by the Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma, the press release said.

Datin Paduka Hajah Hayati was elected as the chairperson of the meeting, which discussed a range of legal issues such as 'The Role of the Attorney General', 'The Use of Technology in Court', 'Media Freedom and Defamation', 'Strengthening Disaster Laws in an Era of Climate Change' and 'International and Regional Cooperation in Criminal Justice Matters'.

The Law Ministers and Attorneys General of Small Commonwealth Jurisdictions Meeting is held every three years and 23 Commonwealth countries and territories attended this year's meeting, the press release said.

The Meeting of Senior Officials of Commonwealth Law Ministries which preceded the Meeting of Law Ministers of Small Commonwealth Jurisdictions also discussed a range of legal issues such as 'Alternative Dispute Resolution' and 'Reform of the Legal Profession', 'Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters', 'Counter-Terrorism Measures' and 'Legislative Drafting'.

The Meeting of Senior Officials of Commonwealth Law Ministries is held every 18 months and is a forum for senior law officials from the Commonwealth to discuss legal issues of common interest and to prepare the work programme of the Law Ministers Meeting which is held every three years, the press release said. - Borneo Bulletin (23rd October 2010)
