His Majesty views UBD’s latest invention and scientific findings

AFTER consenting to present scrolls to the graduates at the 25th Convocation of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of UBD, also consented to view a presentation of UBD’s inventions and research findings outside the Senate Hall of the university’s Chancellor Hall.

Among the inventions displayed were UBD-IBM Centre’s n-plug, a smart plug with the capability of alleviating peak loads presented by UBD-IBM Centre’s Doctoral student, Mohd Fauzi bin Zaini, and a 3-D Wind Farm Design and Management System which optimally chooses the number and size of the wind turbines, most suited for a specific wind condition and site characteristics. It was presented by Hajah Siti Farah Haji Japar, also a Doctoral student under the UBD-IBM Centre.

Another invention is the Improved Soxhlet Extractor System for Bran Oil Extraction. The system is able to extract 1.8 grammes of bran oil in one hour whereas conventional methods can only extract one gramme in four hours.

Meanwhile, a Biology MSc student, Aziah Muhamad presented her findings on the characteristics and health benefits of various local plants.

Among the plants is the Centella Asiatica, locally known as the Pengaga, in which she found elements that could boost memory and relieve hypertension. - Borneo Bulletin (13 September 2013)
