HIS Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and the Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, yesterday called for the “strengthening” of Muslim youths in the region in order to constantly uphold the teachings of Al-Quran in addressing various challenges brought about by current developments and globalisation.

In a sabda at the opening ceremony of the 6th Southeast Asia Youth Al-Quran Reading Competition, His Royal Highness said the competition is a continuous effort by the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to uplift the recitation of the Al-Quran among youths in Southeast Asia.

“The competition provides the participants with the environment for a healthy competition in increasing the spirit of camaraderie and cohesion in the region. Through it, youths are able to share experiences and expertise in the recitation of Al-Quran.”

On regional solidarity and understanding, His Royal Highness welcomed the involvement of Asean youths in volunteerism work such as the Asean Young Professional Volunteer Corps project which is an initiative of Brunei Darussalam as the Chair of the Asean Summit 2013.

His Royal Highness cited the Firman of Allah the Almighty in Surah Al-Ma’idah Verse 2: “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah the Almighty; indeed, Allah the Almighty is severe in penalty.

“So this is what we also hope from Islamic youths in the region. Muslim youths must strive towards the path of righteousness by firmly upholding the essence of the teachings of Al-Quran.”

His Royal Highness said Brunei Darussalam has strengthened such efforts under the wise decision of His Majesty through the implementation of the Syariah Criminal Penal Code.

“The enforcement (of the code) is consistent with the provision contained in the Brunei Darussalam Constitution which is Islam being the official religion.

“Towards this, youths in the country should join forces to provide continuous support in complying with Allah the Almighty’s law in accordance to the Al-Quran and As-Sunnah.

“The regulations of the Syariah criminal law ensure fairness and peace for all of mankind under the guidance of Allah the Almighty”. - Borneo Bulletin (8 December 2013)
