Royalty graces Nuzul Al-Quran ceremony

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam graced the commemoration of the National Level Nuzul Al-Quran (Revelation of the Holy Al-Quran) celebration last night at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

Accompanying His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, HRH Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, HRH Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, HRH Prince ‘Abdul Malik together with other members of the royal family.

Upon arrival His Majesty and the royal family members were welcomed by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad bin Pg Hj Abd Rahman together with committee members for the celebration.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by the State Mufti, Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Awg Abdul Aziz bin Juned.

This was followed by a speech delivered by the Minister of Religious Affairs, in his capacity as chairman of the executive committee for this year’s celebration whereby he explained the five categories competed in this year’s memorisation and understanding of Quranic verses competition.

The finalists – five each for the five categories – were selected from the 256 participants who competed in the preliminaries and semi-finals.

Category A was for participants who are 10 years old and below. Each participant was required to memorise Surah Al-Insyiqaaq, Surah Al-Buruuj, Surah Ath-Thariq, Surah Al-A’laa, Surah Al-Ghasyiyah, Surah Al-Balad, Surah Asy-Syams and the Ayat-ayat Lazim which begins from Surah Ad-Dhuha to Surah An-Nas.

Participants in this category also have to memorise and understand the meaning of Surah Al-Insyiqaaq, Surah Al-A’laa, Surah Ad-Dhuha and Surah An-Nas.

This year’s winners in Category A were Mohd Hafizuddin bin Mohd Saidin in first place, Dk Nur Amni Syazwani binti Pg Mohd Aminuddin in second while Dk Nur’adlina binti Pg Mohd Aminuddin took third.

Category B participants (for participants aged 15 years old and below) had to memorise Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Yaasiin, Surah Ad-Dukhan, Surah Ar-Rahmaan, Surah Al-Waqi’ah, Surah As-Saff and Surah Al-Mulk. They also had to memorise and understand Surah Luqman and Surah Al-Hasyr.

Category B winners were Nursa’adat Afifah binti Mohamad in first place, Nur Syahirah Tul Musyirah binti Musa in second while Muhd Aiman Hakim bin Zullkiflee in third.

Meanwhile, Category C was open to all age groups who had to memorise Juzuk (section) One to Three of the Al-Quran and understand the meaning of all verses in Juzuk One.

This year’s winners in Category C were Julazni bin Haji Zaini in first place and Asiah binti Haji Ibrahim and Hassan Nasrullah Aiman bin Mohd Azami in second and third, respectively.

Category D was an open category, whereby participants had to memorise Juzuk One to Juzuk 15. Participants were also required to memorise and understand the meaning of all verses in Juzuk Eight.

Winners in this category were Haji Ahmad Faez bin Haji Daim, Abdul Afiq @ Muhd Afiq Abdul Aziz bin Haji Abu Bakar and Muhd Faturrahman bin Embran.

Category E participants were also in an open category whereby they had to memorise all 30 Juzuks and also memorise and understand the meaning of all verses in Juzuk 19.

First place in this category went to Aqilah binti Haji Ayub followed by Dk Nurul Hafizah binti Pg Hj Tejudin in second while Muhd Abu Hurairah bin Ariffin came third.

First place winners from each category were also presented their readings last night.

The minister, in his speech, was pleased to note that all participants competing in the National Level Nuzul Al-Quran competition have shown improvement, not just in memorisation of verses but also in the understanding of the verse itself.

Prior to the announcement of winners, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to launch the ‘Mushaf Brunei Darussalam dan Terjemahannya (Translations)’ the full 30 Juzuks edition. A video presentation of the illumination of the mushaf was also shown.

The ceremony continued with a special lecture entitled “Al-Quran Suluh Umat Cemerlang”, presented by Haji Dennie bin Haji Abdullah, Senior Istinbat Officer from the State Mufti’s Office.

His Majesty consented to deliver a titah to mark this year’s celebrations.

This year, the Nuzul Al-Quran celebrations was organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “Al-Quran Suluh Umat Cemerlang”. - Borneo Bulletin (15 July 2014)
