HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to attend the National 1436 Hijrah New Year ceremony at Jame’ ‘Asr Hassnil Bolkiah.

Accompanied by HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, HRH Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, HRH Prince ‘Abdul Malik and HRH Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel, His Majesty and other members of the royal family were greeted upon arrival by Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Religious Affairs – who was chairperson of the ceremony – and committee members.

The ceremony began with the recitation of the Year End 1435 Hijrah Doa led by Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Yahya bin Haji Ibrahim, followed by a mass Maghrib prayer led by Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin.

This was followed by a recitation of the New Year 1436 Hijrah Doa.

The event then saw a mass Sunat Hajat prayer led by Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Suhaili, to ask Allah the Almighty to bestow peace and tranquility upon Brunei Darussalam and prevent it from disaster.

The ceremony then continued with a recitation of verses of the Al-Quran by Awang Mohammad bin Ali, Winner of 16th International Tilawah Al-Quran in Moscow, Russia.

In his welcome speech, the minister said activities would be organised in conjunction with the Hijrah New Year, such as a presentation of gifts to children born on Muharram 1,1436 Hijrah; talks at ministries, education institutions and mosques in all four districts; and cleaning campaigns at mosques, suraus and prayer halls.

“This year’s celebration is themed ‘Unite in Upholding the Laws of Allah the Almighty’.

“This theme drives us to carry the nation’s responsibility which requires the application and implementation of Allah the Almighty’s laws, be it in daily life or administration.

“Islam has promised a better and perfect life if we submit ourselves and obey the rules and laws of Allah the Almighty,” he said.

A tazkirah (reminder) was then delivered by Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Home Affairs, recipient of the Religious Figure Award 1435 Hijrah.

This was followed by a Doa Selamat led by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, State Mufti.

A mass Isyak prayer was then carried out, led by Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Awang Besar.

Similar prayers to welcome the 1436 Hijrah New Year were also held at mosques, suraus and prayer halls nationwide. - Borneo Bulletin (25 October 2014)
