His Majesty officiates Knowledge Convention 2014

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday officiated the Knowledge Convention 2014 with the theme ‘Science and Technology: Catalyst of Development and Enhancing the Ummah’s Quality of Life’. The event was held at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas.

Also present were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Development in his capacity as the co-chairperson of the steering committee and Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awg Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awg Othman, Minister of Home Affairs as well as other members of the steering committee.

The Knowledge Convention 2014 began with the recitation of verses of Al-Quran by Mohammad bin Ali, the champion of the 15th International Tilawah Al-Quran Competition in Moscow, Russia.

The event saw a special talk delivered by Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, State Mufti, entitled ‘Science & Technology Catalyst of Development and Enhancing the Ummah’s Quality of Life’.

His Majesty consented to sign a plaque at the lobby of the ICC.

His Majesty then proceeded to view an exhibition which carries the concept of knowledge and information featuring the importance of the role of science and technology in all aspects of life, including provision of facilities and infrastructure in enhancing the quality of life of the people in the country.

His Majesty also consented to visit the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien Memorial Gallery.

Among the objectives of the Knowledge Convention are to uphold the Vision 2035, which is to create a high quality of life for the people and to upgrade their standard of living to be among the top 10 countries in the world according to the United Nations Human Development Index.

In addition, it also acts to support the idea of Zikir Nation which prioritises science, particularly advanced technology used to improve the quality of life which should be based on Akhlakul Karimah (noble attitude).

Throughout the week-long Knowledge Con-vention 2014 which will end on November 4, various information-filled activities will be conducted such as symposium, premier lecture and forums.

The Knowledge Convention 2014 is an annual event held in commemoration of His Majesty’s 68th birthday celebration, jointly organised by the Prime Minister’s Office and Ministry of Development. - Borneo Bulletin (29 October 2014)
