Families Bless Royal Couple at “Berbedak” Ceremonies

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha graced the Majlis Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja or royal powdering ceremony at Istana Nurul Iman last night.

The sixth in a chain of ceremonies of the royal wedding between His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince, and Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah binti Pengiran Salleh 'Ab Rahaman - it was carried out separately for the groom and bride in full pomp and pageantry.

The Majlis Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja or royal powdering ceremony began with the arrival of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaullah, the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha at the Balai Singgahsana Indera Buana or throne room of Istana Nurul Iman. Also present were His Majesty’s brothers, sons and daughters, His Majesty’s sisters as well as other members of the royal family.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Paduka Doctor Awang Haji Hussein duly informed Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz that the ceremony to invite His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince, was ready to be commenced.

Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah then graciously informed His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam that the ceremony to invite His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah The Crown Prince was indeed ready. His Majesty in due course commanded Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Indera Setia Diraja Shaibul Karib Pengiran Anak Haji Idris and several other Pengiran cheterias to invite His Royal Highness the Crown Prince to the Balai Singgahsana Indera Buana.

His Royal Highness The Crown Prince was flanked by an uncle, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah and followed closely behind by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Indera Setia Diraja Shaibul Karib with several Pengiran cheterias as he entered the throne room. Ahead of the procession were royal warriors bearing ceremonial royal regalias including the Dian Tunggal and four personal regalias of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and other royal decorations.

As soon as His Royal Highness the Crown Prince entered the throne room, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela informed Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah that the powdering ceremony for the groom was ready to proceed. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah then graciously informed His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam that the Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja was indeed ready to proceed. His Majesty commanded that the proceedings be duly commenced.

As the Zikir Syarafil Annam or Zikir Merhaban resounded, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam was invited to apply powder paste of seven colours and sprinkle rose water in the palms of the Crown Prince’s hands, followed by Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha. Outside the palace, cannon fires boomed out nineteen times.

Other members of the royal family followed suit in applying powder paste and sprinkling rose water, comprising of His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, Yang Mulia Datin Hajah Faizah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul Azim, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malek, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Rashidah Saadatul Bolkiah, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Her Royal Highness princess Hajah Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Noor Ehsani, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Babu Raja Pengiran Anak Hajah Besar, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Indera Setia Diraja Sahibul Karib Pengiran Anak Haji idris and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim. The Crown Prince’s parents-in-law, Pengiran Salleh Ab’ Rahaman and Dayang Rinawaty binti Abdullah also performed the ritual on their son-in-law. To bless the ceremony, the State Mufti, Yang Dimuliakan Lagi Dihormati Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz read the doa selamat.

His Royal Highness the Crown Prince then left the Indera Buana Throne room flanked by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah and followed closely behind by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Indera Setia Diraja Sahibul Karib with several pengiran cheterias; and accompanied by bearers of royal regalias and paraphernalias.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela then informed Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria that the ceremony to invite the bride into the ceremony was ready to proceed. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah in turn informed His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam that ceremony to invite the bride into the proceedings was indeed ready. His Majesty commanded that the proceedings be duly commenced.

His Majesty subsequently commanded Yang Dimuliakan Seri Laila Pengiring Diraja Datin Seri Utama Dayang Hajah Rosnah and Datin Paduka Hajah Zahrah and the entourage to invite Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah to the throne room.

Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah entered the throne room flanked by Yang Dimuliakan Seri Laila Pengiring Diraja Datin Seri Utama Dayang Hajah Rosnah dan Datin Paduka Hajah Zahrah and other entourage. The bride, too, was accompanied by various royal regalias, borne by maids-in-waiting known as dayang-dayang.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela once again informed Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah that the royal powdering ceremony for the bride was ready to commence. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheterias likewise graciously conveyed to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam that the ceremony was in place and ready to proceed. There upon, His Majesty commanded that the proceedings be commenced.

Once again His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha led in the applying of powder and sprinkling of rose water in the palms of Their Majestys’ daughter-in-law Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah’s hands.

His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, Yang Mulia Datin Hajah Faizah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Abdul Azim, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malek, His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Rashidah Saadatul Bolkiah, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Amal Umi Kalthum Al-Islam, Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Noor Ehsani, Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Babu Raja Pengiran Anak Hajah Besar, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz, Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Indera Setia Diraja Sahibul Karib Pengiran Anak Haji idris and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim took turns to do likewise. The bride's father, Pengiran Salleh Ab Rahaman and her mother Dayang Rinawaty binti Abdullah followed suit in performing the ritual on their daughter.

Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah was born on the 9th April 1987 at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital in Bandar Seri Begawan. Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah is the third and youngest child.

The State Mufti, Yang Dimuliakan Lagi Dihormati Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Datu Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz once again read the doa selamat to bless the ceremony.

The royal bride, Yang Mulia Dayangku Sarah then left the ceremony accompanied by, as with her arrival, Yang Dimuliakan Seri Laila Pengiring Diraja and Datin Paduka Hajah Zahrah and the entourage as well as a complement of bearers of royal regalias.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela once again presented himself to Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Shahibun Najabah, this time to inform him that the Istiadat Berbedak Pengantin Diraja has been carried out. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Shahibun Najabah in turn graciously informed His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam that the ceremony has been completed. His Majesty consequently commanded that the ceremony be duly brought to a close.

Also present at the ceremony were Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran-Pengiran Cheteria, Cabinet Ministers, members of Councils, Deputy Ministers, Pengiran-Pengiran Peranakan, Pehin-Pehin Manteri, Manteri-Manteri Pedalaman, Ambassadors, High Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries and Head of Departments.
