The finals for the 'Pasang' (a traditional game) competition was held at the school hall of Mentiri Primary School yesterday. Several schools within the Brunei II division were invited to take part in the competition.

The competition held in conjunction with His Majesty's birthday celebration was initiated by the school's principal, Cikgu Hj Suhaili bin Hj Jaffar, and supported by Brunei Museums Department.

Prizes were presented by the guest of honour Awang Arsad bin Abd Adis, the Acting Director of the Co-curriculum Department, Ministry of Education.

Awang Arsad noted that the latest initiative by His Majesty's Government to preserve positive cultures in Brunei, through the Ministry of Education, was recreating the traditional game in the form of a 'software' that was perfected by a lecturer from the Computer and Mathematics Department of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

The competition was divided into two categories - teachers and students. Cikgu Noralina bte Ahmad of Kapok Primary School bagged first prize in the competition in the teachers' category, while Md Hazazi bin Abu Bakar of Dato Othman Primary School was the champion in the students' category. - Borneo Bulletin (7th August 2005)
